Weather Adventure

A fancy lightning show (who needs fireworks?) and 74 mph winds roared through Sioux City last night, leaving over 10,000 people without power! I woke up wondering what exactly was slapping the windows so hard and wondering if they were simply going to blow in! Branches fell off trees in our neighbors yards, and one neighbor's tree in front simply broke off and fell over, but I guess the damage in the older neighborhoods - bigger, older trees - is much worse. A few houses around town got trees blown into them. Power lines are down, lots of streets are blocked by fallen trees. It makes me glad we own a house in a new-ish neigboorhood with baby trees!

Visiting with a co-worker, who moved here from Texas last November, she was telling me about seeing trees down and literally feeling the building shake in the wind from her 3rd floor apartment in the middle of the night. Then she said 'it's like a weather adventure - all year round'.

I think that's a pretty good description for the midwest. April and, oh, September are pretty calm... and the rest of the year is simply a weather adventure.
