"Everyone Should Have a Little Man Around" and Learning the Art of NO

My husband was talking on the phone to an old friend last night and the friend apparently asked how fatherhood was, or something like that, and hubby gave laugh full of joy clear from his toes and replied "It's so much fun. Everyone should have a little man around."

It was just neat to hear.

And already, daddy's better at disciplining that little man than I am. We have a wine rack that a little person could easily reach and pull full (and expensive) wine bottles down on top of himself. It's really about the only thing in the house that he truly can't touch and so far, we're leaving it there for a learning opportunity. We think he needs to know there are things he's not allowed to have. (At some point we'll probably have to put it up, time will tell).

So a couple weeks ago daddy spend one evening, while I was at Yoga, telling Baby Blue Eyes 'NO' and pulling him away from the wine rack. By the time I got home he knew he wasn't supposed to touch it and in the time since he's gotten close but hasn't touched it (though he HAS spend time sitting in front of it, chewing on a strap to his booster seat, staring longingly and probably wondering what magic it holds).

Last night, for the first time, he crawled on over, pulled himself up on the rack and started reach for some wine. Daddy said, very firmly, "A.., NO". And the little guy immediately plopped back on his butt, and looked up at daddy with the funniest mischevious grin I've ever seen, and then continued playing with his toys.
